By William Barriff. 1635
William Barriff was a member of the Society of the Artillery Garden who were leading exponents of the English Style of infantry drill and training, a style closely copied from the Dutch but with some modifications. He and his fellows were enthusiasts of the Military Arts and they met to practice weapon handling and drill, often under professional tuition.
Barriff’s manual covers every aspect of the training and manoeuvring of a company of infantry from the simplest to the most complex and concludes with a complete six day training programme.
The manual was highly regarded by officers on both sides of the English Civil War many of whom had little military experience outside the militia
Six editions where published from 1635 to 1661 which reflects the contempory view that it was both definitive and usable.
