These plain paper note books are bound in a style known as 'flexible binding' which is the most common style of book binding used up to the late 18th century. The sections of paper are sewn together onto linen cords which are then laced into the boards. Head bands are stitched onto the head and tail of the spine and the book is then covered with goat or calf skin which has been dyed using period dyes. The paper is a high quality laid paper with no water marks and they are decorated with tooling designs that are taken from original bindings.
